I chose to watch the videos “The Impact of Cubism” and “The Mystical North: Spanish Art from the 19th Century to the Present.” I selected these videos because I have not heard of nor explored these topics before and wanted to do so. 2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned. In the video entitled “The impact of Cubism” I was informed that cubism is a large painting that is composed of geometric shapes to create the piece. Cubism is from the 20th century of the art period. I also learned that Pablo Picasso inspired and served as a mentor for the artist Gris. In the video “The Mystical North: Spanish Art from the 19th Century to the Present” I learned that most of Pablo Picassos’ work represented in an abstract cubist way. This mask originates from South America, specifically Columbia.Texture is expressed because the areas that represent the face appears to be smooth and the lower areas appear to be coarse. Line can also be seen with the drawings that represent the mouth, eyes and the eyebrows on the mask. The shape resembles that of a pumpkin to me. There are wooden ears that are tied to the back that are extended when the mask is worn. I selected this piece because it has aspects of a human face and appears more realistic to me. I was also fascinated by it because of the simple yet complex details that are included. This is an African mask. It is referred to as the Dan Bird Mask. It is typically represented culturally in the countries of Liberia and Ivory Coast. The repetition of the outline and lines on the beak helps to place emphasis on that part of the mask. This week, I decided to watch the videos entitled “African Art” and “Buddhism.”  I chose the videos because I never really delved into the art in these particular cultures and was curious to know more. I also wanted to see if there were any comparisons that I could make with the two different cultures. Another thing I wanted to know was the types of inspirations that went into the artworks that were being created. 2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned. From each video, there were a few key concepts that I learned. From the “African Art” video, I learned about the connection art had to rituals that were practiced. Masks were a major part of the rituals and practices. From the “Buddhism” video, I learned that Buddhism is a religion that focuses on peace as a main goal for its followers. I watched “Leonardo da Vinci: The Mind of the Renaissance” and “Velazquez.” The reason I selected the video on Leonardo da Vinci is because I am familiar with a few of his works, but I wanted to learn more about him and his life. I also wanted to know what inspired him being an artist. The reason I chose to watch the Velazquez video is because I never heard of this artist before and I wanted to be exposed to his work. I also wanted to know more about his life and inspirations. Also, unlike the other video options this one did not have a title, which made me curious to see what it was about. 2. There were a few key concepts that I learned from watching both videos: “Leonardo da Vinci: The Mind of the Renaissance” : I learned about the professions of his mother and father. 1. What was it like using your hand as subject matter for a drawing? It was interesting because although it seemed like something simple at first, there were also challenges. I got lo learn how to put control over each hand when drawing. It was interesting to look at the details of the drawing of each hand when I was finished. Looking at my hands to be as precise as possible was actually a fun task. 2. What media did you select - pencil or charcoal? Why? I selected pencil to use for my drawing because it is easier to erase and creates less mess than charcoal. I was able to work better with it because it made my work look cleaner and neater. Being that I made a few mistakes while creating the drawings, I was able to get rid of my mistakes and not have an unclean background. 3. I selected the video The Greek Awakening: Art from the 5th Century BC because the title was interesting and I was curious to know what specific details the video entailed about art in that specific time period. 2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned. I learned a few things from watching both videos. From the first video How Art Made The World 1- More Human Than Human, I learned that about sculptures, specifically the sculpture of Venus. The sculpture of Venus is worth $60 million. Another thing I learned from this video is that overtime, the styles of Egyptians never changed. The video I chose The Greek Awakening: Art from the 5th Century BC, I learned about the history of Greek and how the art from that era is important because many people learned a lot from it because it added to their creativity. In the video Architecture: The Science of Design I learned that a skyscraper is made up of two distinct parts. One part is the superstructure, which is the art that stands above ground that we recognize as the building. Another part is the underground substructure.Taking the power that wind has into consideration is also important. It is significant that when designing buildings, that the structure is strong and secured enough to handle wind. The higher a building is, the more violent the wind gets, so it is important that the structure of buildings are properly built to ensure safety.
