module 9 video review

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

I watched “Leonardo da Vinci: The Mind of the Renaissance” and “Velazquez.” The reason I selected the video on Leonardo da Vinci is because I am familiar with a few of his works, but I wanted to learn more about him and his life. I also wanted to know what inspired him being an artist. The reason I chose to watch the Velazquez video is because I never heard of this artist before and I wanted to be exposed to his work. I also wanted to know more about his life and inspirations. Also, unlike the other video options this one did not have a title, which made me curious to see what it was about.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

There were a few key concepts that I learned from watching both videos:“Leonardo da Vinci: The Mind of the Renaissance”: I learned about the professions of his mother and father. His mother was a servant girl and his father was a lawyer. From the time he was a child, he was passionate about art and always wanted to express himself through drawing and other ways. A main thing about his artwork is that they always included elements of reality and were realistic in their appearance. “Velazquez”: He was a Spanish painter who focused a few of his works around people born with Dwarfism. He painted what he saw without trying to beautify it.This makes his work as close to reality as possible. Everything that Velazquez painted he saw within himself, including the landscape and the paintings of royalty. He also was seen as an artist that was not a colorist because he included very little to no color in his work.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The videos relate to the readings in the text because they both focus of the life of artists, how they grew up and what motivated them to do art. They both also relate because they not only talked about the works of the artists, but they also give information about who they really were before they became the artists people see them as today. The unique approach that each artist takes to create their work is also highlighted.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

I really enjoyed watching both videos. I was able to get more insight into the life of an artist that I was familiar with and one I knew nothing about. Getting details about their lives will allow me to look at their works differently because I will be able to see a story each time I look at their creations. I was able to get basic information about them such as where they are from, learn about their families and also get to be on a journey of how they became such influential individuals in the world of art.
