Module 15 (Guernica by Pablo Picasso)

1. Use the vocabulary you have learned in class to describe this artwork or performance in detail.
The painting Guernica by Pablo Picasso is considered a monochromatic or monochrome painting. This is so because of the one color that is used throughout the piece. Various shades of grey is used to highlight different parts of the piece. Based on the facial expressions and the hand gestures in the painting expressed through the creatures, it is evident that there is chaos expressed in the artwork. This painting of from the cubism era, the geometric shapes and the overlapping of each painting within the painting helps to confirm this.
2. What processes were used to create this work? What social influences might the artist be responding to and why?
When creating this piece, Pablo Picasso had various steps. When he first got news about the bombing he was in Paris. That very day, he created the first draft of the incident. Within the weeks ahead; roughly a month, he composed different sketches that would then turn out to be apart of the Mural. He used oil paint to create this piece. A photographer named Dora Maar started to collaborate with Picasso. Maar took photographs of Picassos’ creative process. Pablo Picasso was responding to the bombing of the town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. This took place on April 26, 1937. This is a major political piece that was created as a way to bring awareness to the devastating event done by the Nazis.
3. What is the relationship of this work to the time and society in which it was created? Describe the symbols used to express this relationship.
The painting was created in response to and also to represent the destruction that resulted in the town of Guernica. This took place during the Spanish Civil War. Along with the individuals in the painting, there is also a bull and horse. These two animals play a major role is Spanish culture.Them being included represents the suffering for an entire nation due to the fact that these symbols represents so much to the Spanish Culture. In the center of the painting at the top, there is a light bulb that is giving off light. This is to help with the darkness both literally and figuratively that has taken place due to the destruction of the town after the bombing. This political image by Picasso serves as a reminder to what took place on April 26, 1937.
4. Identify elements in the work that evoke a persuasive or emotional response. Be specific about what those responses are and why.
All the creatures or individuals in the painting had facial expressions that alluded to a great deal of pain and distraught after a destruction. The individual in the far right corner has their hands placed in the air and their mouth open. This to me illustrates the highest level of loss of hope and pain that a person can express after destruction takes place. To the far left, there is a person that appears to be a woman who is holding the lifeless body of a child. I can see the pain based on both her facial expression and her body language. The man in the forefront of the painting seems to be close to death and is holding on to the little hope that he might have left. How his hand is placed and the sadness I see in his eyes drove me to that conclusion.
5. Evaluate what you perceive to be the strengths and weaknesses of the work.  Apply discipline specific vocabulary and concepts when describing your point of view.
The strengths I see in this painting is the way Picasso was able to blend the various shades of grey together; this allowed me to pay more attention closely to what was happening. I am able to clearly tell that there is chaos in the piece based on the expressions of fear and distraught. The weaknesses I see in this painting is that there is a lot going on, which made it hard at times to come to the conclusion as to what was taking place throughout the piece. I wish this painting included less images within the piece because I was a little overwhelmed when I first began to analyze the painting.
