What did you think of visiting the gallery?
I really enjoyed visiting the art gallery. I thought it was a lot of fun to be able to explore it and definitely learned so much from it. I was able to better appreciate art and looking at the exhibit from a different perspective gave me the opportunity to dissect the work. The open space allowed me to get a good glance at the pieces and was able to appreciate the works without feeling overwhelmed. I also enjoyed the theme and the fact that I was able to compare and contrast the pieces easily.

Artwork 1: Charles E. Burchfield, Sleet Storm (After the Ice Storm), 1920, watercolor, gouache, and graphite on paper.
This piece of artwork illustrates a time period after a harsh and brutal winter sleet storm. In the image, there is an old man walking through the large piles of snow. Since it is obviously winter, there are no leaves on the branches of the trees. There is one house in the forefront of the painting and there are a few other houses in the background. The atmosphere is gloomy and there is not much activity taking place, hence the circumstance due to the weather. The elements used in the piece are lines, form, shape and color. Lines and shape are used to create each aspect of the painting, from the trees to the houses. Form is captured by the how realistic the painting appears to be. Color is used with the gloomy and dull look that the piece has and the snow and other elements captures this as well. The principles used are movement and contrast. Movement can be seen with the man that is walking through the snow/sleet. With contrast, there is a bit of both dark and light that engulfs this painting, which makes it look even more realistic. I think that artist was trying to demonstrate the natural state of how the winter typically is. This can be interpreted with both the atmosphere and the elements such as the snow and the trees without leaves. I really love this painting because I feel as if I can easily place myself in the image because of my experience with this type of harsh weather.

Artwork 2: Julian Montague, Pond, 2018, digital photograph.

This piece of artwork captures a live image of nature in its natural and pure state. The pond is the main focus of the photograph and is at the center as well. The trees and plants surrounding the pond and vibrant and are a mixture of light and dark green as well as light purple. There are white clouds in the sky and some areas of it are light blue. The elements used were color, form and space. Color is seen with the plants and the sky. Space is seen with the openness of the area, which allows one with the opportunity to get a good glance at all the areas of the photograph. Form is also used to capture the landscape and the size and shape of the plants. The principles used are movement and balance. With movement, one is able to look at the picture from one direction to the next and captures the moment. With balance, all the aspects of the picture comes very well together, including the pond, plants and the sky. I think the artist is trying to say that one should always take a moment to appreciate what is around them, especially regarding nature. Looking at this photograph allowed me to better appreciate nature and pushes me to take a second out of each day to take in what is around me.

Artwork 3: Charles E. Burchfield, Untitled (Hilltops), ca. 1920s, watercolor and pencil on paper.
This piece captures a hilltop that shows mountains, valleys and clouds. There is both a touch of realistic and a cartoon unrealistic look. The elements and principles used in the painting are, texture, balance, color, space and form. Texture can be seen with how the trees on the hilltop and the hilltop itself. It appears to be smooth and roughness can also be seen as well. Balance is seen with how all the parts of the paintings come together. The hilltop and the sky complement one another and ties the painting together very well. Color is shown with the light and dark colors from the parts of the hilltop. The dark and light colors from the trees on the hilltop as well as the clouds adds a good touch to the painting. Space and form are seen with how the landscape is laid out and the advantage one gets when looking at it from one side to the next. In regards to form, it is captured with how the trees are painted. I think the artist is trying to say that people should appreciate each and every aspect of nature. He wants us to pay attention to details and bring the pieces together in order to completely comprehend the importance of the creation of these things. I thought this was a great painting because of how well and effortlessly the artist was able to capture the atmosphere.
