A.) Which artworks make an impact or impression on me? Why?
1.Yves Tanguy. Divisibilite indefinie (Indefinite Divisibility), 1942. Oil on canvas.
Out of all the paintings that I looked at, this image stood out to me the most. The colors are very vibrant and all the colors go very well together. The items are uniquely placed together. The items seem realistic and seem as if they are jumping out of the painting. The shadow of the items and the light reflecting made the image stand out more to me. For these reasons, this image made the biggest impact on me.
2. Piero Dorazio. A Peaceful Solution, 1976-77. Oil on canvas
This painting is very simple yet detailed at the same time. This image made a big impression on me because of how vibrant the colors are. The fact that the artist chose to paint in straight lines fascinated me. The work was very neat and came together very well. I can clearly see that the author put a lot of work into creating the painting. The yellow that the artist used throughout the image helped to bring out the beauty of the work.
B.) Which artworks do I feel a connection with? Why?
1. Albert Bierstadt. The Marina Piccola, Capri, 1859. Oil on canvas
Immediately after seeing this painting, I was drawn to it. I got a sense of peace while looking at the artwork because of the beautiful scenery. Albert Bierstadt traveled to Italy and became inspired by the atmosphere. Looking at this painting I can feel the passion he got based on the details that he included in the work. Being on the beach and in the countryside is something that I love. It brings me peace of mind and looking at it brings back memories of times of me being on the beach and relaxing. The people on the beach seem to be socializing, which I can relate to when I am in atmospheres like this one. The picture is very vibrant and the light colors from the clouds and the sky gives me a feeling of happiness. I especially love the image because it is clearly summer, which is a season that I love. I can easily place myself in the painting which make me connect to it more.
2. Yasuo Kuniyoshi. I Think So, 1938. Oil on canvas
As soon as I saw this painting I felt connected to it because it reminded me of myself at certain points in my life. The girl is clearly not the happiest at this point in her life. It seems like she has a lot going on in her life and had a long day. The way her arm is placed on her face gives a clear indication that she is not happy. I feel like this painting is a mirroring image of myself. I have had rough days and situations have taken a toll on me. After getting home from a long day and attempting to release the negative situations that I encountered, this is how I would look. The subtle details and how the colors balance is another thing that made me feel connected to this image. The expression on the girl’s face evoked different emotions, such as sadness and confusions, which at times I could relate to.
C.) Which artworks would I like to know more about? Why?
1. Amedeo Modigliani. La Jeune bonne (The Servant Girl), ca. 1918. Oil on canvas.
Looking at this artwork, I was not sure what to think about it at first. It did not give me much feeling while looking at it. I would like to know more about the artist and what was going on in the artist’s life at the time that inspired this painting. I would also like to know the historical context behind this painting of “The Servant Girl.” I did like how realistic the features of the lady in the painting were. The dark colors reflected well with the image of the girl because it does indicate to me that there was a sense of sadness. I would like to know more about what was taking place.
2. Charles Webster Hawthorne. The Family, 1911. Oil on panel.
Looking at this picture I see a family that is close knit yet disconnected at the same time. Family is typically about being together and happiness. I do not see happiness in this picture and I am curious to know why. I would like to know if the painting of this image has anything to do with the personal life of the artist. The father and son being the forefront of the painting and the mother being in the background raises questions for me. The fish on the ground and the father wearing an apron gives me the impression that the father works at some type of fish market. I would like to know why the artist strategically placed the fish on the table.
we have a few of the same pictures, and I had a connection to those pictures as well, i think so painting gives me the feeling of unhappiness or a relief from stress
